Role scope

Due to rescheduling recently undertaken, Kent Projects requires additional resources from February to undertake discrete work scopes/packages on the Ampol Future Fuels Project in Lytton. The Spooling Fabrication Manager has specialist technical skills and experience related to stainless steel, carbon steel, HDPE, copper and other piping systems. This role is responsible and accountable with the Construction Manager for managing the overall site spool fabrication requirements and on-site fabrication yard on the Ampol Future Fuels project.

This role ensures that all project fabrication activities meet project schedules, quality standards, industry-specific welding codes (e.g., ASME, AWS, API), and stringent site safety requirements. This role leads a team of supervisors, fitters, welders, trades assistants and staff to drive productivity, maintain quality output and ensure the timely delivery of fabricated spools to feed the construction activities and meet the project schedule.


Your Day to Day will Include:

  • Project Planning and Execution:
  • Lead the daily production of high-alloy steel (e.g., Duplex, Super Duplex) and carbon steel pipe spools strictly according to the project’s engineering isometric drawings and ITPs (Inspection and Test Plans)
  • Coordinate directly with the project construction planning team to ensure 'just-in-time' delivery of fabricated modules to meet the critical path of the project schedule.
  • Coordinate with the engineering and procurement teams to ensure the timely availability of materials, equipment, and drawings for spooling to be fabricated.
  • Manage NDT coordination and hydrotesting protocols specific to the specific facility requirements.
  • Review field fit joint and work with the rigging team to maximize spooling fabrication at grade to avoid FFW at heights (if possible)Maximise welding dia inches and plan the work area (spooling fab area)
  • Provide overall support to the Construction Manager with respect to the management and on-site storage, delivery and transportation of fabricated pipe spools and piping systems
  • Manage the pipe spool fabrication yard team, which includes craft workers, supervisors and staff, by providing visible leadership, clear direction, mentoring, guidance and support.
  • Ensure that the on-site pipe fabrication team is adequately trained, productive, safe and possess the required skills and certifications to perform their tasks safely and efficiently.
  • Conduct regular inspections and reviews of all fabricated spools and address any quality issues promptly in accordance with pipe specification & tolerances.
  • Implement quality control procedures and inspection and test plans ensuring compliance with project specifications, codes and standards.
  • Coordinate with the Quality Control/Quality Assurance (QA/QC) team in identifying non-conformities, issue NCRs, conduct root cause analysis (RCFA), and manage the corrective and preventive actions (CAPA) process through to closure.
  • Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE):
  • Promote a strong safety culture and enforce HSE policies and procedures on-site.
  • Conduct safety meetings, toolbox talks, and job hazard analyses to mitigate risks and ensure a safe working environment.
  • Investigate incidents, accidents, and near misses, and implement preventive measures to avoid their recurrence.
  • Communication and Coordination:
  • Act as a liaison between the project management team, engineering, procurement, subcontractors, and other stakeholders.
  • Provide regular progress reports, including updates on schedules, budgets, and potential risks or delays.
  • Collaborate with other discipline Managers to ensure effective fabrication deadlines are met.
  • Promote a strong safety culture and enforce HSE policies and procedures on-site.

About You:

Our ideal candidate will have extensive experience managing spool fabrication yards on EPC projects, strong knowledge of Australian welding standards and fabrication methods; the ability to interpret engineering drawings, codes, and specifications; proven leadership and HSE compliance capability; familiarity with Queensland major project requirements and project management tools and strong problem-solving and decision-making skills.
