About the job:

Kent is looking for an E&I Field Engineer to support site execution activities at the Kearl Oil Sands project. This role represents Kent in the field and serves as the primary technical interface between Engineering, Construction, Quality, Contractors, and the Client. The E&I Field Engineer provides real-time technical support to resolve electrical and instrumentation constructability, design, and installation issues, ensuring engineering intent is correctly interpreted and executed in the field. This is a site-based, hands-on role requiring sound engineering judgment, decisiveness, and the ability to operate independently with minimal home-office support in a demanding industrial environment. This is a fly-in/fly-out project with a 14/14 shift schedule, 12-hour shifts, and camp accommodations at Wapasu.

Field Support & Technical Guidance

• Interpret electrical and instrumentation engineering drawings, including single-line diagrams, schematics, cable schedules, lighting layouts, grounding plans, and work packages to respond to contractor technical queries.
• Provide real-time technical support to resolve constructability, design, and installation issues related to power distribution, MCCs, switchgear, transformers, heat tracing, lighting, grounding, instrumentation systems, and control interfaces.
• Support troubleshooting of electrical and instrumentation systems, including power distribution, motors, VFDs, substations, instrument loops, field devices, control wiring, cable tray routing, and field terminations.
• When requested, provide site information and field data to the Home Office to support electrical and instrumentation engineering design development.
• Support development of small-scale field scopes related to electrical and instrumentation modifications or installations as requested by the Client’s Construction Management Team (CMT).
• Interpret P&IDs, instrument indexes, datasheets, I/O lists, cause & effect matrices, loop diagrams, and control narratives to respond to contractor technical queries.
• Provide real-time technical support to resolve constructability and installation issues related to field instrumentation, control valves, analyzers, junction boxes, marshalling panels, and control system interfaces.
• Support troubleshooting of control loops, PLC/DCS interfaces, field devices, and industrial communication networks.

Construction & Execution Coordination

• Work closely with the Client to support E&I construction and commissioning execution activities.
• Ensure contractor technical queries (TQs), including Requests for Information (RFIs), are addressed promptly.
• Participate in field walks, as requested, to verify execution of RFI responses, confirm installation compliance, and develop punch items.
• Assist in verifying that electrical and instrumentation work aligns with approved engineering deliverables, project specifications, and applicable codes and standards.

Collaboration & Communication

• Act as a liaison between Home Office Electrical and Instrumentation Engineering and Client Construction and Quality teams.
• Participate in daily and weekly coordination meetings, providing updates on contractor queries and E&I engineering-related matters.
• Communicate technical information clearly to both engineering and non-technical stakeholders.

Your knowledge/skills, education, and experience:

Knowledge/Qualification/Training/Certification:

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Instrumentation Engineering, or related discipline.
• Min. 10 years of relevant engineering experience, preferably in field engineering, E&I construction, oil & gas, mining, or heavy industrial projects.
• Experience in oil sands mining, SAGD, substations, instrumentation systems, or large-scale industrial electrical installations is a strong asset.

Technical Skills

• Strong understanding of electrical power distribution and instrumentation/control systems, construction methods, and engineering drawings.
• Familiarity with applicable codes and standards (Canadian Electrical Code, CSA, IEEE, API, ABSA, where applicable).
• Experience with MCCs, switchgear, transformers, grounding systems, lighting systems, cable tray routing, instrumentation field devices, and hazardous area classifications.
• Proficiency with tools such as Navisworks, AutoCAD, SmartPlant Review, ETAP (asset), and Microsoft Office.

Communication

• Excellent command of the English language, both written and verbal.
• Ability to clearly communicate technical information to stakeholders.
