About the job:
Kent is seeking a Lead Automation Engineer to support upcoming FEED and brownfield/greenfield scopes across multiple client proposals. This role requires a highly experienced automation subject matter expert with P.Eng credentials, deep control systems expertise, and the ability to guide multidisciplinary teams through complex automation design, troubleshooting, and integration challenges.
Skills and Responsibilities:
Responsibilities:
Automation & Control Systems SME Support
- Serve as the subject matter expert (SME) for automation systems, control strategies, and instrumentation interfaces
- Lead troubleshooting for advanced automation and control system issues
- Guide DCS/ESD/SIS/PLC system architectures, configuration, and integration
- Evaluate and validate control narratives, cause-and-effect diagrams, and logic structures
- Support controls programming and/or providing guidance to programmers as required.
Engineering Leadership & Technical Oversight
- Lead or provide senior review for instrumentation and automation engineering deliverables
- Support FEED deliverables, basis-of-design documents, equipment specifications, and I/O lists
- Ensure design compliance with industry codes, client standards, and regulatory requirements
- Develop Material Requisition (MRQ/MRP), including completion of Technical Bid Evaluation (TBE) and Vendor Data & Documentation Review (VDDR), to support procurement.
- Mentor and train intermediate and junior engineers.
Vendor, Client, and Stakeholder Interface
- Interface with automation vendors (PLC/DCS/ESD/SIS/SCADA) for technical clarification and design alignment
- Prepare and/or review FAT/SAT/SIFT documentation, participate in testing, and support commissioning validation
- Provide expert-level client communication and consultation across engineering disciplines
- Serve as a primary point of contact for automation-related decisions and inquiries
Procedure, Systems, & Documentation Development
- Develop and refine control system philosophies/narratives, alarm management guidelines, and automation procedures
- Ensure documentation quality, accuracy, and alignment with project execution requirements
Reliability, Optimization & Modernization
- Identify opportunities for system optimization, lifecycle improvements, and obsolescence mitigation
- Provide recommendations for long-term automation roadmap development
Field & Verification Activities
- Conduct site visits for verification, walkdowns, troubleshooting, and constructability reviews
Reporting & Recordkeeping
- Provide input to weekly progress reports, engineering coordination meetings, and project updates

Your knowledge/skills, education, and experience:
Knowledge/Qualifications/Training/Certifications:
- Instrumentation Engineering degree
- Active Professional Engineer (P.Eng) registration with Alberta and/or Ontario required
- 15+ years of instrumentation & automation engineering experience
- Deep SME-level expertise in control systems (PLC, DCS, SCADA, Safety Systems)
- Strong understanding of CSA codes, IEC standards, and applicable regulatory requirements
- Experience with FEED deliverables, brownfield/greenfield engineering, and multi-site execution
- Demonstrated experience supporting modernization, lifecycle planning, and digital control platforms

- Excellent English communication skills (oral and written)
- Strong client-facing presence with the ability to explain complex automation issues clearly
- Able to coordinate effectively across multidisciplinary engineering environments
