Medicine Bow Fuel & Power Project

DKRW Coal to Liquids
A grass roots mine-mouth coal-to-liquids facility
Location: Medicine Bow, Wyoming, United States
Operator: DKRW Advanced Fuels LLC
Duration: 2006 - 2007
Scope: FEED and pre-FEED

The Medicine Bow Fuel & Power Project was a grass roots mine-mouth coal-to-liquids (CTL) facility including an underground longwall mine, coal conveying equipment, process units, fully integrated power block, product storage tanks, water wells, truck and rail loading facilities and product pipelines.

The mining operation was designed to produce 8000 TPD of coal to be used by the CTL facility to produce 13,000 BPD of refined products (9,500 BPD diesel and 3,500 BPD naphtha). The Project consisted of:

  • Underground longwall coal mine
  • Coal storage and conveying equipment
  • General Electric proprietary coal gasification unit.
  • Air Separation Unit (ASU)
  • Syngas Cleanup Unit
  • Sour Gas Shift Unit
  • Acid Gas Removal Unit (AGR)
  • Sulfur Recover Unit (SRU)
  • CO2 Drying & Compression Unit
  • Syngas Preparation & Hydrogen Recovery
  • Fischer Tropsch Synthesis Unit (F-T)
  • Product Upgrade Unit
  • Power Block

At the 75% completion of FEED, MBFPower directed Kent to revise the process basis to make 6,000 STPD methanol and subsequently to make 17,000 BPD gasoline instead of F-T diesel as final product. Haldor-Topsoe was selected as the methanol process and ExxonMobil MTG technology was selected.

SERVICES PROVIDED:

  • Prepared Basic Engineering Design Questionnaires to facilitate licensor development of Schedule “A” packages; received and further developed licensor supplied “Schedule A” packages; developed a process design for Coal Handling, Syngas Cleanup, CO2 Compression, Power Block, F-T Water Processing, and Product Storage; and prepared an RFP package and obtained quotes for the Air Separation Unit.
  • For all process units, with the exception of the Air Separation Unit (ASU), Kent provided Process Engineering, Piping Design (3D modeling), Electrical Engineering & Design, Instrumentation & Control Systems, Mechanical Engineering, Civil/ Structural/ Architectural Engineering & Design, and Project Management.
  • Prepared a site development plan to include man camp accommodations, assessment of local infrastructure to support the impact of a large project, a transportation study for heavy haul access to site, all logistics including receiving, inspection and warehousing onsite
