About the Job

Working out of Kent office in Calgary, Alberta, you will be a part of a team that works on fast paced and technically complex designs of new, refurbish, upgrade and modification projects for process, maintenance and administration facilities in the mining, petrochemical and chemical industries both on and offshore globally and in Canada. As a HVAC and building mechanical systems engineer in Kent’s Engineering department and reporting to the Manager of Mechanical Engineering Canada, you will consult on HVAC system and equipment design for a wide range of projects, and work with other engineers, project managers, and construction professionals as needed to create and/or modify design parameters.

You will, working under a subject matter expert, communicate directly with customers to understand project requirements, goals, design specifications, and operational environments to evaluate cost, feasibility, and implementation of HVAC equipment.

Responsibilities:
  • Consult on HVAC system and equipment design for a wide range of projects, and work with other engineers, project managers, and construction professionals as needed to create and/or modify design parameters.
  • Analyze HVAC systems and equipment when necessary to find inefficiencies or malfunctions and create solutions to resolve operational issues, optimize performance and/or increase the efficiency of operation.
  • Communicate directly with customers to understand project requirements, goals, design specifications, and operational environments to evaluate cost, feasibility, and implementation of HVAC equipment.
  • Create and submit detailed bids that outline costs and timelines for projects.
  • Develop and oversee all aspects of engineering deliverables production, computer modelling and construction document packaging including project and interdisciplinary coordination, and directing drafting.
  • On-site installation and system operation verification of HVAC system installations.

Capabilities:
Prepare, design, select, draft in CAD, coordinate, and/or review in compliance with related Codes, Regulations, and Industry standards the following:
  • HVAC, Plumbing and Fire Protection systems.
  • Design concepts and basis of design documents.
  • Air flow and room-to-room pressurization diagrams, and flow and control schematics.
  • Steam, Hydronic, gas and refrigerant flow and riser diagrams.
  • Air conditioning, air condensers, air handlers, exhaust fans, and dampers.
  • Design and layout of commercial and industrial duct systems including supply, return, exhaust, ventilation including selection of air terminal and VAV boxes, grilles, diffusers, and louvres.
  • HVAC and building mechanical system and equipment specifications.
  • HVAC and building management control system and equipment specifications.
  • Chillers, boilers, heat exchangers and associated central plant equipment.
  • Air conditioning, air condensers, air handlers, exhaust fans, air valves and diffusers.
  • Low pressure steam, Hydronic and domestic hot water boilers, air compressors, vacuum pumps, clean steam generators, valves and regulators, and coolers.
  • Hydronic and low-pressure steam heating systems including condensate return systems.
  • Building plumbing, storm and sanitary drainage systems including building neutralization, sedimentary and sanitary sumps, and lift station.
  • Technical material requisitions for all the above equipment to support procurement.
  • Technical bid evaluations and shop drawing reviews to support procurement.
  • Resolving and providing technical responses to construction requests for information.
  • Occasionally conduct field surveys of existing conditions and on-site construction progress punch list reviews as required by the nature of the project.
  • Field reviews and test results from vendors and construction contractors.

Requirements:
  • 5 -10 years’ experience in the industry.
  • General knowledge of building fire suppression systems and the underlining principles of active and passive fire and smoke control would be beneficial but not required.
  • Microsoft Excel and Word
  • Proficient in AutoCAD and Avera 3D. Other platforms would be an asset.
  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering and holding an engineering license to practice in Alberta.
