About the Job
Kent is looking for a Field Engineer to support site execution activities at the Kearl Oil Sands project. This role supports Kent’s field presence and serves as a key technical liaison among Engineering, Construction, Quality, Contractors, and the Client. The Field Engineer assists in providing technical support to address constructability, design, and installation challenges, ensuring engineering intent is properly understood and implemented in the field. This is a site-based, hands-on role that requires sound engineering fundamentals, attention to detail, and the ability to work collaboratively within a team environment. The position receives regular guidance from senior engineers and coordinates with the home office. This is a fly-in/fly-out project with a 14/7 shift schedule, 10-hour shifts, and camp accommodations at Wapasu.
Skills and Responsibilities:
Responsibilities:
Field Support & Technical Guidance
- Interpret engineering drawings, specifications, piping isometrics, and work packages to support contractor technical queries.
- Assist in providing technical support to resolve constructability, design, and installation issues.
- Support troubleshooting of piping, mechanical, structural, and equipment-related issues in the field under guidance from senior engineers.
- Collect and provide site data and field information to support Home Office engineering activities.
- Assist in the development of small-scale field scopes as requested by the Client’s Construction Management Team (CMT).
Construction & Execution Coordination
- Support construction execution activities in coordination with the Client and contractors.
- Assist in tracking and facilitating responses to contractor technical queries (TQs), including Requests for Information (RFIs).
- Participate in field walks to verify execution of RFI responses and identify punch list items.
- Help ensure that work aligns with approved engineering deliverables and project requirements.
Collaboration & Communication
- Support coordination between Home Office Engineering and Client Construction and Quality teams.
- Participate in daily and weekly coordination meetings, providing updates on assigned tasks and engineering-related matters.
- Communicate technical information clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
In addition to the responsibilities listed herein, the employee may be required to perform other ad-hoc tasks as needed or directed by the supervisor or management. These tasks will be within the reasonable scope of the employee's skills, capabilities, and role within the organization. The intent of this provision is to allow for flexibility and adaptability in meeting the dynamic needs of the organization, ensuring that operational requirements can be met efficiently. All such tasks will be assigned considering the employee's current workload and with respect to their professional development.
Your knowledge/skills, education, and experience:
Knowledge/Qualification/Training/Certification:
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Chemical, or related discipline).
- 5 years of relevant engineering experience, preferably in field engineering, construction, oil & gas, mining, or heavy industrial projects.
- Experience in oil sands mining, SAGD, or large-scale industrial projects is considered an asset.
- Foundational understanding of piping systems, construction methods, and engineering drawings.
- Familiarity with applicable codes and standards (ASME B31.3, CSA, API, ABSA) is an asset.
- Working knowledge of tools such as Navisworks, AutoCAD, SmartPlant Review, and Microsoft Office.
Communication:
- Strong command of the English language, both written and verbal.
- Ability to communicate technical information clearly and effectively.
