Electrical and instrumentation installation and commissioning

Clean Fuels Project, Kuwait

Project KW CFP Kuwait 2
Increase capacity, enhance performance, safety and operational reliability and optimize energy usage
Location: Mina Al Abdullah Refinery, Kuwait
Operator: KNPC, Client: FDHJV
Duration: April 2015 - December 2021
Scope: Electrical and instrumentation installation and commissioning

KNPC’s CFP is a strategic project to expand and upgrade Mina Abdullah and Mina Al-Ahmadi Refineries to be an integrated refining complex with a total capacity of 800,000 bpd. It is expected to boost Kuwait’s global position in the Oil Refining industry.

Energy efficiency and environment protection will also be greatly enhanced. Its clean products will conform to Euro-4 specifications and the project Internal Rate of Return (IRR) is expected to be 11.5%, which is considered a high return for a project of such volume. Instead of selling crude oil directly to the market, the project will add value to Kuwait natural resources and increase the country’s share in the international arena.

Environmental impact will be greatly reduced with much less content of SOx, NOx and other pollutants. For example, sulfur content in gasoline will be cut down from 500 ppm to just 10 ppm, and in gasoil from 5,000 ppm to 10 ppm.

In March 2015, Kent was awarded the CCR Relocation project which entailed a live change over during the ongoing processes of KNPC. All operating groups were required to be relocated to alternate buildings without any disruption to production. The most critical activity was the relocation of Operating Group 10 (OG10) which monitors and controls the critical operation requirements of KNPC and other stakeholders including Equate.

Following successful completion, our team were awarded the complete Electrical & Instrumentation package in Area 2 of the Clean Fuel Project. This entailed the installation and testing of electrical equipment in unit substations, bus ducts, cable installations, lighting and small power, complete earthing works, field electrical works, field instruments, analyzers, junction boxes, ICSS and EICS cabinets, cathodic protection as well as minor civil and preservation works.

The completion of this project lead to a further substantial contract award to deliver Electrical & Instrumentation support services for the warranty period, pre-commissioning/commissioning, start-up, integration and lining up of process systems to meet the turn over and functionality criteria for Clean Fuels Project in Areas 2 & 3
