ADNOC Carbon Capture & Storage Project

ADNOC CCUS Stock
ADNOC is looking to expand its CCUS capability to 5 million tonnes per year by 2030
Location: UAE
Operator: Mubadala Development Company PJSC
Duration: 2008
Scope: Feasibility study

The project addressed the technical and economic feasibility of capturing and transporting CO2 via a pipeline network in Abu Dhabi. The study evaluated the potential for capture of carbon dioxide from major sources within Abu Dhabi and the neighbouring Emirates and pipeline to EOR locations. Several suitable locations were identified, and recommendations made to proceed with up to four CCUS projects totalling nearly 8 million TPA of CO2.

To identify the oil fields that would benefit from CO2 injection to enhance oil recovery, the study objectives included:

  • Identification and technical and economical evaluation of options for onshore and offshore CO2 capture from industrial facilities in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and deliver to oil/gas field operators for Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR);
  • Investigation of emission sources including major existing and planned industrial facilities such as power plants and oil and gas related industries (i.e. refineries, gas processing plants, LNG plants, chemical and petrochemical plants, oil production facilities, etc.), as well as a large future aluminium smelter currently in design. The project to include ranking and economic analysis of the identified carbon capture and distribution schemes.
  • Recommendation of an initial pilot project based on ranked options and technical and economic feasibility;
  • Development of a road map for comprehensive Abu Dhabi based carbon capture and distribution network, with potential extension across the United Arab Emirates and region.
