At Kent, we are committed to making a positive impact on both people and our planet. With a pragmatic approach, we face difficult truths head-on, guided by confidence and optimism.
Our carbon emissions report conveys our bold yet credible data-led net-zero plans that target rapid, deep, and achievable emission reductions. This is a key part of our "Tackling Climate Change from Within" focus area, under our "Supporting a Thriving Planet" pillar. Last year, we successfully reported our Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions. This year, we've expanded our data collection and have now included our Scope 3 emissions, providing a more comprehensive view of our environmental impact.
Following on from the creation of our scope 1 and 2 baseline in 2022, we have followed the same process to report our 2023 emissions.
Our scope 1 & 2 emissions have reduced from 15% from 2022 to 2023. Whilst we have introduced a number of initiatives this year to reduce our emissions, we are also conscious that the drop in emissions is also significantly affected by a change in project scopes this year. This means that we have to recognise the impact changes in projects will have on our emissions and be prepared fluctuations in our data.
Despite an increase in office emissions by 35%, we saw significant decreases in emissions from on-site plant and equipment (16%) and vehicles (27%). This progress highlights our commitment to reducing our carbon footprint and enhancing sustainability across our operations. Even so, we’re determined to do more and will continue implementing emission reduction initiatives.
We know our scope 1 and 2 emissions are only part of our footprint and the impact we are having on the climate, and so we have established our scope 3 emissions baseline.
We employed a specialist consultant to undertake materiality assessment against the 15 categories in scope 3 to identify which ones we should report against, our baseline emissions were generated in line with these findings.
In 2023, our total carbon footprint amounted to 296,001.34 tons CO₂e. This includes 30,898.16 tons from Scope 1, 2,676.82 tons from Scope 2, and a significant 262,426.36 tons from Scope 3 emissions. Scope 3 emissions represent the largest portion, accounting for 89% of our total footprint, underscoring the importance of addressing indirect emissions throughout our value chain.
As well as our long-term commitment to Net Zero it’s important we set milestones along the way to keep us on track.
Our first milestone is a 30% reduction in scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2027.
Now that we understand what our scope 3 emissions, we are working to establish a near-term target in this area.
Our Sustainability VP, Emma Scott, leads our efforts to meet our reduction targets
A roadmap has been developed detailing the actions, action owners and timescales required to deliver on our commitments
Temporary power generation on our projects remains our largest source of emissions.
We have implemented a hybrid power solution pilot project at our highest emitting location, we will now monitor the impact. We are working to role this out wider across other current and planned projects.
