About the job:

Kent is looking for a Junior Construction Engineer to support field execution activities at Kearl. This is an entry-level position for a junior professional or co-op student seeking hands-on field experience in a large-scale industrial environment. This role supports Kent’s field team by assisting with coordination, documentation, and basic technical activities across Engineering, Construction, Quality, Contractors, and the Client. The successful candidate will primarily focus on tracking deliverables, supporting RFIs, and assisting with field verification activities under the guidance of senior engineers. This is a site-based, hands-on role with a 14/7 rotation, 10-hour shifts, and camp accommodations at Wapasu.

Skills and Responsibilities:

Responsibilities:

Field Support & Coordination

  • Assist in reviewing engineering drawings, specifications, and work packages to support field activities
  • Support tracking of drawings, revisions, and construction documentation
  • Assist in collecting field data and reporting back to senior engineers and the home office
  • Help identify and document field issues for escalation

Construction & Execution Support

  • Assist in tracking and coordinating contractor technical queries (TQs) and RFIs
  • Help draft RFIs and follow up on responses to ensure timely resolution
  • Participate in field walks to verify installation progress and identify deficiencies or punch items
  • Support coordination of daily construction activities with contractors and client teams

Communication & Team Support

  • Attend daily and weekly coordination meetings and provide updates on assigned tasks
  • Communicate effectively with field teams, supervisors, and engineering support groups
  • Maintain organized records of field activities, RFIs, and action items

General Duties

  • Provide administrative and technical support to the construction and engineering teams
  • Perform other ad-hoc tasks as required to support project execution

In addition to the responsibilities listed herein, the employee may be required to perform other ad-hoc tasks as needed or directed by the supervisor or management. These tasks will be within the reasonable scope of the employee's skills, capabilities, and role within the organization. The intent of this provision is to allow for flexibility and adaptability in meeting the dynamic needs of the organization, ensuring that operational requirements can be met efficiently. All such tasks will be assigned considering the employee's current workload and with respect to their professional development.

Your knowledge/skills, education, and experience

Knowledge/Qualification/Training/Certification:

  • Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Civil, or related discipline) OR currently enrolled (co-op eligible)
  • 0–2 years of relevant experience (internship, co-op, or entry-level role)
  • Interest in construction, field engineering, or industrial projects
  • Basic understanding of engineering drawings and construction workflows
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook)
  • Exposure to tools such as AutoCAD or Navisworks is an asset

Communication

  • Excellent command of the English language in both oral and written communication and skills.
  • Ability to follow instructions and ask questions to support learning
