About the job:

Kent is seeking an Instrument and Controls Technician in Trinidad to support future potential Oil and Gas Commissioning & Startup opportunities.

Responsibilities:

Position Summary:

The Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) Commissioning Technician plays a critical role, demands a meticulous approach and a deep understanding of these intricate systems. Your expertise will be instrumental in guaranteeing the safety, reliability, and efficiency of the entire plant, contributing significantly to the success of the project. As an I&C Technician, you will be responsible for executing static and dynamic commissioning, and start-up activities ensuring the seamless integration and optimal performance of complex instrumentation, control systems, and automation equipment. This role ensures all systems are installed, configured, calibrated, tested, and functioning according to project specifications, industry standards (ISA/IEC), HSE, regulatory requirements, and the CSU execution plan. This role supports the Commissioning Lead/Manager in preparing systems for safe handovers to operations.

Safety & Compliance:

  • Demonstrate personal HSSE leadership and excellent HSSE behaviors and ensure safety expectations are communicated and maintained.
  • Ensure all commissioning work is performed in accordance with HSE standards, project specifications, standards and procedures.
  • Ensure strict adherence to site safety rules, Permit to Work (PTW), Lock-Out/Tag-Out (LOTO) procedures, risk assessments, hazard controls, and site safety protocols.
  • Assist commissioning disciplines to compile Livening Up Notices to allow safe sub system/system energization.
  • Ensure all team members are fully aware and understand all the projects’ safe working practices and adhere to them to maintain a SAFE working environment.
  • Identify hazards and contribute to job safety analysis (JHAs), risk assessments, and toolbox talks, and energization readiness reviews (ERRs).
  • Maintain strict adherence to hazardous area classification requirements and equipment integrity.
  • Attend all mandatory training as specified in HSE and Permit to Work training schedule.
  • Undertake Performing Authority duties in accordance with PTW procedures.

Commissioning Activities:

  • Review P&IDs, I/O lists, instrument data sheets, loop diagrams, cause & effect matrices, and control narratives.
  • Perform walkdowns and inspections, punch list identification and verification of system readiness for Mechanical Completion (MC) against project specifications and ITRs.
  • Perform instrument inspections: installation verification, power supply, grounding, shielding, cable terminations, marshalling panels, junction boxes, and control cabinets, torque checks, impulse line flushing, instrument tubing checks, and tagging verification.
  • Execute point-to-point loop checks and tests for field devices (sensors, transmitters, valves) and control systems (DCS, PLC, SCADA, SIS & FGS) to ensure they operate according to design specifications.
  • Conduct instrument calibrations and configuration for transmitters, switches, valves, analyzers, and specialty instruments (pressure, temperature, flow, level, vibration, etc.).
  • Range checks with pressure transmitters, change settings on a pressure switch, recalibrate a SMART pressure transmitter and record Instrument Test Records (ITR’s)
  • Reconfigure, calibrate and function check displacement type level transmitters and SMART type of level transmitters and record ITRs
  • Commission temperature detectors (RTD or thermocouple) and SMART temperature transmitters including a range change by a 20% increase or decrease of its current settings, recalibration and full loop check from heat source to transmitter output, record ITRs.
  • Commission differential pressure flow transmitters into a fully operational condition, calibration check and record ITRs
  • Set up and stroke test to operate open/closed on a 4–20 mA control signal, complete full loop calibration and record ITR.
  • Perform functional testing of instrumentation and control logic according to commissioning procedures and specifications.
  • Verify communication and functionality between field instruments, controllers, and human-machine interfaces (HMI).
  • Validate logic, alarms, shutdowns, permissives, and interlocks based on Cause & Effect requirements.
  • Support SAT (Site Acceptance Testing) and FAT (Factory Acceptance Testing) when required.
  • Preservation of instrument & controls equipment.
  • Support energization and start-up of equipment, including pumps, compressors, electrical packages, and process units.
  • Assist control room operations during start-up, tuning loops, and verifying system performance.

Troubleshooting and Technical Support:

  • Diagnose system hardware and software issues identified during commissioning and start-up; collaborate with engineering, construction, and vendors to resolve faults.
  • Troubleshoot system faults, control logic issues, wiring errors, configuration problems, signal, and communications issues:
  • Wiring/Connection Failures: Loose, damaged, or poorly connected wires leading to signal loss.
  • Sensor/Transmitter Failures: Incorrect calibration, drift, or sensor degradation.
  • Control Valve Failures: Diaphragm leakage, positioner failure, or stuck valves.
  • Signal Noise/Interference: Electromagnetic interference affecting instrument readings.
  • Controller Issues: Improper PID tuning causing instability or "wandering" process variables.

Documentation and Quality Control:

  • Complete commissioning check sheets, calibration certificates, loop check sheets, punch lists test records, ITRs, NCRs, commissioning procedures and other turnover documentation.
  • Update commissioning dossiers and provide technical input for punch list closure and ensure traceability of all test results.
  • Provide feedback for system readiness reviews, walkdowns, and turnover packages (MC, SC, RFSU).
  • Maintain detailed records, including loop folders, checklists, red line drawings, system configuration changes, data sheets, wiring diagrams and as-built documentation.
  • Ensure all work follows project specifications, OEM guidelines, ISA standards, and safety procedures.
  • Maintain accurate daily reports, progress tracking, and updates to support completion management systems (Go-Technology) as needed.
  • Participate in the development and refinement of commissioning procedures.

Interfaces & Coordination:

  • Monitors commissioning activities, troubleshoots functional issues and assists in resolution to ensure satisfactory quality is attained to facilitate seamless system handovers from construction to operations.
  • Take part in Tri Party Sub System/System Mechanical Completion walk downs and punch list item categorization.
  • Work closely with CSU leads, commissioning engineers, operations and project team, construction teams, and OEM vendors for the execution of commissioning and start up scopes.
  • Provide field support during dynamic and integrated commissioning testing activities, system performance runs, and handover to Operations.
  • Support the Commissioning Lead with planning, sequencing, and prioritization of work packs.
  • Support completion management systems (Go-Technology) as needed.

Your knowledge/skills, education, and experience:

Qualification/ Certification:

  • Technical Diploma or Certificate in Instrument & Controls, Electronics, Automation Engineering or Technology.
  • Strong experience with PLC/DCS/ESD/SIS/FGS systems (Honeywell, Emerson, Rockwell/Sensia, Yokogawa, ABB, Siemens, Schneider).
  • Training in hazardous area equipment (EEHA/CompEx) is an asset.

Skills Requirement:

Demonstrate understanding of Commissioning and start up process and procedures inclusive of:

  • Knowledge and experience in commissioning & startup of oil and gas architecture, facilities, utilities and process plant.
  • Strong understanding of commissioning sequences and energization procedures.
  • Knowledge of compiling loop packs with ability to read & comprehend P&ID, Alarm & Trip Schedules, Cause & Effect Matrices, Loop Drawings, Control Narratives, System Architecture Drawings, Logic Diagrams.
  • Good working knowledge of Instrument test equipment and calibrators: Multifunction calibrators (e.g., Fluke 754/753); Loop calibrators (mA testers, Fluke 707/715); Pressure calibrators and LP/HP hand pumps; Temperature calibrators (Dry block calibrators, RTD/thermocouple simulators); Digital multimeter (DMM).
  • Knowledge of commissioning software tools and digital calibration equipment, industrial communication protocols (HART, Foundation Fieldbus, Modbus, Profibus, Ethernet/IP diagnostic tools). Laptop with OEM software for: DCS/PLC configuration; ESD/SIS tuning; VFD configuration; SCADA interface checks.
  • Strong understanding of control systems (DCS, PLC, ESD/SIS, SCADA).
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings: P&IDs, wiring diagrams, loop sheets, hook-up drawings, relevant engineering drawings, related specifications, quality standards and equipment manuals, and to follow work instructions and relevant plans and schedules.
  • Understanding of IOGP Life Saving Rules and industry standard safety protocols.
  • Understanding of Control of Work processes during execution; follow all safety requirements including but not limited to: Safety Data Sheet (SDS), LOTO, Confined Space and Fall Protection etc.
  • Knowledge of accessing the systems completion database and completing commissioning B check sheet content in a technical and legible manner.

Communication:

  • Full fluency in English is required.
