About the job:

Kent is looking for an experienced Instrumentation Engineer to join our Engineering team in Calgary, Alberta. This role will support the design, development, and execution of instrumentation and control systems for industrial projects within the energy sector. The successful candidate will work as part of a multidisciplinary engineering team, providing technical expertise throughout all phases of project delivery, from conceptual design through detailed engineering, procurement support, construction, commissioning, and startup. This role requires a strong understanding of instrumentation engineering principles, applicable industry codes and standards, and the ability to deliver high-quality engineering solutions while maintaining Kent’s commitment to safety, quality, and client satisfaction.

Skills and Responsibilities:

Responsibilities:

  • Develop instrumentation engineering deliverables including instrument specifications, data sheets, instrument indexes, loop diagrams, hook-ups, cable schedules, and installation details.
  • Prepare and review P&IDs, control narratives, cause and effect diagrams, and control system architecture documentation.
  • Perform instrumentation sizing and selection for pressure, temperature, flow, and level measurement devices.
  • Support the design of control systems including PLC, DCS, SIS, and SCADA interfaces.
  • Develop material requisitions and provide technical bid evaluations for instrumentation equipment.
  • Coordinate with process, electrical, mechanical, piping, and civil disciplines to ensure integrated project execution.
  • Participate in HAZOP, SIL, constructability, and design review meetings.
  • Review vendor documentation and ensure compliance with project specifications and applicable codes.
  • Provide engineering support during procurement, construction, commissioning, and startup activities.
  • Resolve technical queries and support field engineering activities as required.
  • Ensure engineering deliverables are completed in accordance with project schedules, budgets, and quality requirements.
  • Promote compliance with Kent’s HSSEQ standards and client-specific engineering procedures.

In addition to the responsibilities listed herein, the employee may be required to perform other ad-hoc tasks as needed or directed by the supervisor or management. These tasks will be within the reasonable scope of the employee's skills, capabilities, and role within the organization. The intent of this provision is to allow for flexibility and adaptability in meeting the dynamic needs of the organization, ensuring that operational requirements can be met efficiently. All such tasks will be assigned considering the employee's current workload and with respect to their professional development.

Your knowledge/skills, education, and experience:

Knowledge/Qualification/Training/Certification:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Instrumentation Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation, or eligibility for registration with APEGA, is considered an asset.
  • Typically 5-10 years of instrumentation engineering experience within the oil & gas, energy, petrochemical, or industrial sectors.
  • Experience preparing instrumentation engineering deliverables for EPC and brownfield projects.
  • Strong knowledge of instrumentation design principles, field instrumentation, and control systems.
  • Experience with PLC, DCS, SIS, and SCADA systems is preferred.
  • Familiarity with applicable industry standards including ISA, IEC, CSA, API, and Canadian electrical codes.
  • Experience with SmartPlant Instrumentation (SPI), AutoCAD, or other engineering design software is considered an asset.
  • Working knowledge of hazardous area classification requirements and intrinsically safe design practices.
  • Experience supporting commissioning and startup activities is considered an asset.
