About the job:

Kent is looking for a Senior Structural/ Civil Engineer to be based in Calgary, AB and support regional project site(s).

The Senior Structural/ Civil Engineer is responsible for coordinating the production of engineering deliverables and provides progress reporting for a project in accordance with the project plan.

They will supervise a team of civil/structural engineers to address all discipline specific requirements within the project or undertakes/ manages specialist studies / technology reviews. Liaise with other disciplines to achieve design consistency. To support the project management team in planning and identifying technical issues which could limit progress or impact project budgets.

Support the Civil/ Structural Group Manager with development of discipline engineers and ensuring technical excellence.

Skills and Responsibilities:

Responsibilities:

  • Assigned as working Lead (area lead or project lead) for multiple sustaining capital projects or greenfield projects, while still being able to execute Engineering/Design related deliverables.
  • Structural analysis and design of various structures, foundations and dynamic analysis.
  • Civil design of roads, site grading, pipeline corridors and drainage systems.
  • Building design including the fire protection and per National Building Code Part 3.
  • Review and authentication of design prepared by others, drawings developed by the CSA design team, Specifications and contract documents.
  • Resolve design and field engineering difficulties.
  • Review project documents for technical accuracy.
  • Assign work and evaluate technical competence.
  • Provide Technical guidance to the CSA team members.
  • Identifying investigations, value engineering and special analysis needs on a project.
  • Take part in 3D model reviews, technical audits, constructability review and risk analysis.
  • Engineering progress reports, coordinate engineering work schedule, and determine and schedule work priorities meeting the project schedule.
  • Effective design change management.
  • Keeping abreast of new technical developments and estimating their impacts.
  • Assist in providing Home Office technical support to engineering groups and construction management team at site.
  • Able to work on various life cycles of projects from Concept, FEED, Detailed design Engineering, EPC and EPCM.
  • Estimating and scheduling professional man hours and assessing the progress and quality of civil/structural work.
  • Manage deliverables on time and within the budget.
  • Direct, lead and support small size teams in coordinating civil/structural efforts and keeping the team focused on scope, schedule, and budget.
  • Most projects are multidisciplined and require extensive interface with other staff engineers as well as engineers working out of our offices.
  • Adhere to the best practices, standards, and procedures of the company.
  • Proficient in various types of analysis including static, seismic dynamics, equipment dynamics etc.
  • Proficient in the use of computer analysis & design software (e.g., S Frame, STAAD Pro, Mat3D, Idea StatiC, or similar program).
  • Able to perform adequacy check for existing pipe rack/pipe support/equipment structure/other etc., and its retrofitting in structural steel and foundation.
  • Prepare General arrangement, Layout, Structural, Concrete, architectural drawings and composite layouts based on project requirements.
  • Prepare reports, designs and specifications, and review all drafting work for projects using AutoCAD, Civil 3D and 3D Model with Navisworks.
  • To technically review designs produced and verify completeness to technical and Company standards.
  • Reviewing and checking vendor drawings and other discipline drawings for civil/structural input.
  • Performing fieldwork (site survey) is necessary to gather field data, check tie ins and provide construction support.
  • Reviewing fabrication drawings and other construction submittals for conformance to engineering drawings and specifications.

In addition to the responsibilities listed herein, the employee may be required to perform other ad hoc tasks as needed or directed by the supervisor or management. These tasks will be within the reasonable scope of the employee's skills, capabilities, and role within the organization. The intent of this provision is to allow for flexibility and adaptability in meeting the dynamic needs of the organization, ensuring that operational requirements can be met efficiently. All such tasks will be assigned considering the employee's current workload and with respect to their professional development.

Your knowledge/skills, education, and experience:

Knowledge/ Qualification/ Training/ Certification:

  • As a minimum bachelor’s degree in civil engineering.
  • 12 to 17 years of relevant experience.
  • Has appreciation of multidiscipline engineering design activities.
  • A good knowledge of the interdisciplinary requirements for Oil Sands Mining and SAGD projects.
  • A solid design experience of the central plant facilities, tailings, field facilities, recovery etc.
  • A good knowledge of workshare with multiple offices and High Value Engineering Centers.
  • A thorough knowledge of National Building Code and Canadian standards.
  • Work in office and Site based environments, capable of using appropriate software and excellent interpersonal and analytical attributes.
  • Capability of collating, verifying and handling information and producing/following instructions.
  • Adequate capability in using engineering knowledge and understanding to apply technical and practical skills.
  • Adequate knowledge and understanding of technical requirements in own field and level.
  • Design, development, checking and solving engineering problems.
  • Analyzing, integrating and interpreting results.
  • Capability of reviewing, controlling and ability to direct the work of engineers in own field.
  • Ownership of responsibility for work of self and others.
  • Professional commitment in following appropriate codes of professional conduct, recognizing obligations to society, the profession and the environment.
  • Capability of planning, implementing, controlling work in own field, estimating and forecasting.

Communication:

  • Communication and interpersonal skills to hold presentations and keep audience interested.
  • Able to effectively communicate technical issues to peers and line manager (written and verbal) and hold presentations to project lead and Clients when required.
  • Establish good working relationships and communication with the client and other engineering disciplines both locally and other areas of the company.
