About the job:

Kent is looking for an experienced Senior Electrical Engineer to join our Engineering team in Sherwood Park, Alberta. This position will support the delivery of electrical engineering services across a portfolio of industrial projects within the energy sector. The successful candidate will provide senior-level technical expertise throughout all phases of project execution, from conceptual studies and FEED through detailed engineering, procurement, construction support, commissioning, and startup. Working within a multidisciplinary team, you will be responsible for delivering high-quality electrical engineering solutions while ensuring compliance with client specifications, industry standards, project schedules, and Kent’s commitment to safety and engineering excellence.

Skills and Responsibilities:

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the development of electrical engineering deliverables for industrial and energy projects.
  • Prepare and review single-line diagrams, electrical load lists, cable schedules, equipment layouts, and electrical design calculations.
  • Perform electrical system studies including load flow, short circuit, voltage drop, motor starting, arc flash, and protective device coordination, Harmonic study, grounding study.
  • Develop programming of electrical protection relay by using vendor software (GE and SEL).
  • Develop electrical protection Philosophy and Protection Control and Metering (PC&M) SLDs
  • Specify and size electrical equipment including transformers, switchgear, MCCs, VFDs, UPS systems, generators, motors, lighting, and grounding systems.
  • Develop technical specifications, material requisitions, and evaluate vendor quotations.
  • Define Hazardous area classifications (HAC), develop associated reports and schedules, and perform fugitive emission calculations.
  • Review vendor documentation to ensure compliance with project requirements and applicable industry standards.
  • Coordinate electrical engineering activities with process, instrumentation, mechanical, piping, civil, and structural disciplines.
  • Participate in design reviews, HAZOPs, constructability reviews, and client technical meetings.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and designers.
  • Support procurement activities, construction, commissioning, startup, and field engineering as required.
  • Resolve technical issues and provide practical engineering solutions throughout project execution.
  • Ensure engineering deliverables are completed safely, on schedule, within budget, and in accordance with Kent quality standards.
  • Promote and maintain compliance with Kent HSSEQ requirements and client engineering procedures.

In addition to the responsibilities listed herein, the employee may be required to perform other ad-hoc tasks as needed or directed by the supervisor or management. These tasks will be within the reasonable scope of the employee's skills, capabilities, and role within the organization. The intent of this provision is to allow for flexibility and adaptability in meeting the dynamic needs of the organization, ensuring that operational requirements can be met efficiently. All such tasks will be assigned considering the employee's current workload and with respect to their professional development.

Your knowledge/skills, education, and experience:

Knowledge/Qualification/Training/Certification:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution.
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation with APEGA is required.
  • Typically 10+ years of electrical engineering experience supporting industrial, oil & gas, petrochemical, energy, or infrastructure projects.
  • Demonstrated experience leading electrical engineering activities on EPC, EPCM, or brownfield projects.
  • Strong knowledge of power distribution systems from low voltage through medium voltage applications.
  • Experience performing electrical system studies using ETAP, SKM, EasyPower, or equivalent software.
  • Thorough understanding of Canadian Electrical Code (CEC), CSA, IEEE, IEC, API, and other applicable industry standards.
  • Experience preparing electrical engineering deliverables and supporting multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Previous experience supporting construction, commissioning, and startup activities is highly desirable.
  • Familiarity with SmartPlant, AutoCAD, E3D or other engineering design software is considered an asset.
