Laffan Refinery Zero Liquid Discharge Project

Engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) works associated with the installation of wastewater advanced treatment: zero liquid discharge (ZLD) system to manage treated industrial water (TIW) from Laffan Refinery (LR1) Unit 87 and Laffan Refinery 2 (LR2), Qatar.

Laffan Refinery Company Limited is currently refining condensate to produce hydrocarbons usable in the market using its refinery, Laffan Refinery (LR1). A second refinery Laffan Refinery (LR2) is being designed, built and commissioned south of LR1 and shall refine 146,000 barrels per day of condensate from July 2016.

Based on a mandate from Qatar Ministry of Environment (MoE), treated industrial water (TIW) produced by/from industrial plants shall be re-used as much as possible. To achieve this mandate, LR2 Refinery Project (LR2) will install additional wastewater advanced treatment: zero liquid discharge (ZLD) system to handle treated industrial water (TIW) from Laffan Refinery (LR1) Unit 87 and Laffan Refinery 2 (LR2) Unit 87.

The ZLD system shall consist of ultrafiltration (UF) and reverse osmosis (RO) with associated storage facilities, chemical cleaning facilities and pits. This ZLD system shall be designed to treat the effluent from LR1 and LR2 wastewater treatment systems U87. Purified water (RO permeate or re-use water) from ZLD shall be recycled back to LR1 and LR2 utility facilities. It shall represent around 70% of the feed TIW and shall be used in the cooling systems and the boiler feed water systems for LR1 and LR2. The remaining 30% (RO concentrate) shall be sent to RLIC network for irrigation.

Kent were awarded the engineering, procurement, supply, construction, and commissioning (EPSCC) including pre-commissioning, commissioning until ready for start-up (RFSU) for the Laffan Refinery ZLD Project.
