About the Job

Kent is looking for an I&C Lead Technician for a new build chemical plant project in Ontario.


Project - New Build Chemical Plant in Ontario, Canada

  • Experience level in these roles should be a minimum of 5 years relevant discipline experience (10+ years is preferable)
  • Looking for (as essential skills) strong planning experience as well as good execution experience & Petro-chemical experience (polyethylene cracker as preferred) and/or Utilities plant (Boiler / Cogen Plants).

Key Reporting Relationships:

  • Reports to the I&C lead tech for planning and execution management support.
  • Carries out I&C commissioning execution work as directed by I&C Lead tech.
  • Communicate with the Commissioning I&C lead tech for technical support.

Tasks and Responsibilities:

Systems Completion Planning Phase

Essential experience

  • Hands on knowledge of compiling loop packs with ability to read & comprehend P&ID, Alarm & Trip Schedules, Cause & Effect Matrices, Loop Drawings, Control Narratives, System Architecture Drawings, Logic Diagrams.
  • Hands on knowledge of Microsoft programs such as excel and word.
  • Hands on knowledge of accessing the systems completion database and of pre-commissioning check sheet content

Preferred experience

  • Hands on knowledge of validation of systems completion database against engineering drawings and databases.
  • Preferred experience of assigning pre-commissioning check sheet to instrument tags in SCDB.

Early Commissioning at Module yard Phase

Essential experience

  • Hands on knowledge of completion of commissioning B check sheets in a technical and legible manner.
  • Hands on knowledge of completion of field instrument red lines on documentation such as loop diagrams, data sheets, wiring diagrams etc in a technical and legible manner
  • Hands on knowledge of E-house commissioning inclusive of Switchgear / MCC hard loops and Switchgear / MCC soft loops.
  • Hands on knowledge of modular commissioning of loops and part to loops to temporary ICSS equipment at module boundary.

Systems Completion Execution Phase at Site

Essential experience

  • Hands on knowledge of instrument field tasks within requirements of project permitting, isolations, zero energy states and full compliance with CSU and Area Prime Safe Working practices, methods and processes including JSA’s / FLRA’s / Toolbox talks etc.
  • Hands on knowledge of creating RFI’s first line content in the manner of technical field question.
  • Essential: Accepting and or signing onto permits, JSA, FLRA’s, tool box talks in the capacity of front line user Essential experience of field verification of punch list completion and signing off in systems completion database as required.
  • Hands on knowledge of completion of commissioning B check sheets in a technical and legible manner.
  • Hands on knowledge of carrying out daily instrument commissioning work comprising of loop checking, instrument repair, instrument field support for project activities such as leak testing etc.
  • Hands on knowledge of completion of field instrument red lines on documentation such as loop diagrams, data sheets, wiring diagrams etc in a technical and legible manner

Preferred experience

  • Hands on knowledge of carrying out instrument field support for interlock testing, instrument field support for logic testing, instrument field support for C&E testing, instrument field support for dynamic equipment runs.
  • Hands on knowledge of escorting and providing instrument field support for commissioning vendors as required .
  • Hands on knowledge of having performed I&C lead commissioning technician duties on previous projects

Start-up support Phase

  • Essential experience of live fault finding on running process plant.

Qualification and Experience:

  • Essential to be technician certified, with preferably college technical certificate and 5+ years of relevant and transferable Project/Engineering/Commissioning experience. Maintenance experience considered.
  • Essential experience is an established track record in frontline technician Commissioning, Start Up and initial plant operations.
  • Essential: Proven strong technical skills in discipline subject matter.
  • Essential: Good working knowledge of test equipment at a hands on level.
  • Essential: Good working knowledge of process plant instrumentation at a hands on level.
  • Essential: Good working knowledge of fire & gas devices.
  • Essential: Good working knowledge of E-house commissioning inclusive of transformers, MCC, switchgear and UPS commissioning.
  • Preferred: Hands on DCS knowledge at a loop check level
  • Preferred: Hands on PLC knowledge at a loop check level
  • Commissioning and Start Up operations of a major oil company.
  • Read, write, and speak fluent English, especially as required to function effectively within a project team and to communicate with project management, contractors, and sub contractors.
