Kent is seeking an Electrical Commissioning Technician in Trinidad to support future potential Oil and Gas Commissioning & Startup opportunities.
Responsibilities:
Position Summary:
The Electrical Commissioning Technician is responsible for executing all electrical pre‑commissioning and commissioning activities to safely bring systems from construction completion to operational readiness. The role involves system verification, energization, functional testing, troubleshooting, and supporting handover to Operations in accordance with project specifications, industry standards, HSE, regulatory requirements, and the CSU execution plan. This role supports the Commissioning Lead/Manager in preparing systems for safe handovers to operations.
Safety & Compliance:
- Demonstrate personal HSSE leadership and excellent HSE behaviors and ensure safety expectations are communicated and maintained.
- Ensure all commissioning work is performed in accordance with HSE standards, project specifications, standards and procedures, and electrical codes.
- Ensure strict adherence to site safety rules, Permit to Work (PTW), Lock-Out/Tag-Out (LOTO) procedures, risk assessments, hazard controls, and site safety protocols.
- Ensure all team members are fully aware and understand all the projects’ safe working practices and adhere to them to maintain a SAFE working environment.
- Participate in job safety analyses, toolbox meetings, and energization readiness reviews (ERRs).
- Maintain strict adherence to hazardous area classification requirements and equipment integrity.
- Attend all mandatory training as specified in HSE and Permit to Work training schedule.
- Undertake Performing Authority duties in accordance with PTW procedures.
Commissioning Activities:
- Review and validate construction documentation, redlines, and as-builts prior to system handover.
- Take part in Tri Party Sub System/System Mechanical Completion walk downs and punch list item categorization.
- Hands on knowledge of electrical test equipment (Multimeters, IR testers, Amp meters).
- Perform inspections and verification of electrical installations (cable continuity, insulation resistance, torque checks, grounding, panel inspections).
- Ensure compliance with electrical isolation procedures, Liven Up Notice (LUN), and permitting systems.
- Execute commissioning tests on motors, switchgear, MCCs, transformers, UPS systems, distribution panels, stop/start circuits and associated overloads.
- Assist commissioning disciplines to compile Livening Up Notices to allow safe sub system/system energization.
- Assist in planning and executing safe energization and testing of LV and MV electrical circuits and systems.
- Perform functional testing, loop checks, interlock verification, and equipment start-up sequences.
- Support commissioning engineers and vendors during system integration and performance testing.
- Testing of cathodic protection and grounding circuits and equipment.
- Assist OEM/vendor representatives during critical equipment commissioning. Support SAT (Site Acceptance Testing) and FAT (Factory Acceptance Testing) when required.
- Preservation of electrical equipment.
- Completion of commissioning procedures and work packs for System Handover Management Process.
- Act as Authorized Electrical Person (AEP) for voltage levels less than 1000V AC following assessment by the Responsible Electrical Person and approval by the Site Controller.
Troubleshooting & Technical Support:
- Sound knowledge and background in diagnosing electrical systems such as MCC, UPS, Electrical Panels, Motors, Transformers, ATS etc.
- Diagnose system issues identified during commissioning and start-up; collaborate with engineering, construction, and vendors to resolve faults.
- Perform corrective actions on motors, drives (VFDs), relays, control circuits, and protection devices.
- Provide technical input for punch list closure and carry out re-tests when required.
Documentation & Quality Control:
- Complete commissioning check sheets, calibration certificates, loop check sheets, punch lists test records, ITRs, NCRs, commissioning procedures and other turnover documentation.
- Update commissioning dossiers and provide technical input for punch list closure and ensure traceability of all test results.
- Provide feedback for system readiness reviews, walkdowns, and turnover packages (MC, SC, RFSU).
- Maintain detailed records, including loop folders, checklists, red line drawings, system configuration changes, data sheets, wiring diagrams and as-built documentation.
- Ensure all work follows project specifications, OEM guidelines, ISA standards, and safety procedures.
- Participate in the development and refinement of commissioning procedures.
Interfaces & Coordination:
- Monitors commissioning activities, troubleshoots functional issues and assists in resolution to ensure satisfactory quality is attained to facilitate seamless system handovers from construction to operations.
- Take part in Tri Party Sub System/System Mechanical Completion walk downs and punch list item categorization.
- Work closely with CSU leads, commissioning engineers, operations and project team, construction teams, and OEM vendors for the execution of commissioning and start up scopes.
- Provide field support during dynamic and integrated commissioning testing activities, system performance runs, and handover to Operations.
- Support the Commissioning Lead with planning, sequencing, and prioritization of work packs.
- Support completion management systems (Go-Technology) as needed.
Your knowledge/skills, education, and experience:
Qualification/ Certification:
- Technical Diploma/Certificate in Electrical Technology or related field.
- Electrical licensing or certification per national requirements.
- Training in hazardous area equipment (EEHA/CompEx) is an asset.
Skills Requirement:
Demonstrate understanding of Commissioning and start up process and proceduresinclusive of:
- Knowledge and experience in commissioning and startup of oil and gas architecture, facilities, utilities and process plant.
- Strong understanding of commissioning sequences and energization procedures.
- Reading and interpretation of Single Line Diagrams, schematics and engineering datasheets and vendor documents.
- Competency with testing tools: insulation testers, multimeters, relay testers, VFD diagnostic tools, power analyzers.
- Commissioning of HV & LV electrical power, distribution and generation systems, utilities and electrical systems.
- Experience with MCCs, UPS, switchgear, relays, transformers, motors, and electrical protection systems.
- Understanding of PLC/DCS interface testing, ESD/F&G systems, and control circuit logic.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings: P&IDs, wiring diagrams, loop sheets, hook-up drawings, relevant engineering drawings, related specifications, quality standards and equipment manuals, and to follow work instructions and relevant plans and schedules.
- Understanding of IOGP Life Saving Rules and industry standard safety protocols.
- Understanding of Control of Work processes during execution; follow all safety requirements including but not limited to: Safety Data Sheet (SDS), LOTO, Confined Space, Fall Protection, Electrical Flash NFPA 70-E, etc.

- Full fluency in English is required.
